What is a lead water service line?
- The service line is the pipe that brings water into your home — from the water main in the street to your meter.
- In many older homes, that pipe was made of lead. If your home was built decades ago, its line may be lead.
- How to spot one: find the pipe where it comes through your basement wall, before the meter. Lead pipe is dull gray, soft enough to scratch bright with a key — and a magnet won't stick to it.
- Not sure? Call us — we'll help you check.
Why it matters — your family's health
- There is no safe level of lead for children.
- Lead harms children's development — the brain, learning, and behavior.
- Lead exposure is a risk in pregnancy.
- An old lead line can leach lead into your drinking water — especially when the line is disturbed.
- You can't see it, taste it, or smell it. The only sure fix is taking the pipe out.
Full replacement is the real fix
- Partial replacement isn't enough — it leaves lead pipe in the ground, and can actually raise lead levels in your water for a time after the work.
- Full replacement removes the source — the whole line, main to meter, gone for good.
- A filter treats a glass. Replacement removes the source — permanently.
